Hulda Erfle 100 th Birthday Dec 17 2008
More than 1500 children are thankful that Hulda Erfle's favourite pastime is knitting. She is known as Oma, German for Grandma, by everyone in her small town of Ladysmith, Quebec, and she fulfills that grandmotherly image to a tee. She has spent the past 7 years knitting colourful toques with yarn generously donated by Yarn Forward + Sew On to provide to the Snowsuit Fund. On the days she knits, she averages one toque per day.
Oma's mother taught her how to knit when she was 10 years old. That was 86 years ago! She wanted to learn so that she should make her brother a pair of socks for Christmas. And she hasn't put her knitting needles down since!
In 1960, Oma immigrated to Canada from Germany with her husband and three of her four children after surviving through two world wars and living in concentration camps. Oma loves making sure her family is well taken care of; mostly by ensuring that their tummies are full of German food and that their feet are warm in colourful knit slippers! Her giving nature is extended in everything she does. In other words, each toque she has knit has been made with love.
She is thankful for the love and support she receives from everyone in this community.
